Vajrabhairava is one of the highly revered, principal deities in the Anuttarayoga Tantra class popular within the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism. Also known as Yamantaka, Vajrabhairava is the wrathful manifestation of Manjushri, the Bodhisattva of Discriminating Wisdom. This miniature ritual dagger(phurba)of Vajrabhairava bears an imposing and magnificent appearance, adorned with intricate and elaborate decorations. It features nine heads, with wrathful eyes in all directions. The front-facing head is a buffalo, displaying a fierce and terrifying countenance, with flames of wrath blazing upwards. The uppermost head represents the wisdom of Bodhisattva Manjushri.
The lower part of the phurba showcases a three-sided blade with the head of makaras swallowing flames, and the entire artwork stands on a meticulously hand-carved lotus-patterned base with makara heads, further enhancing its imposing and magnificent aura.
The body of the Vajrabhairava, makara head, and lotus petal decorations are made of 22K gold, while the remaining components are made of 925 silver, these two combined colors add richness to the overall design. The phurba is adorned with 36 natural diamonds and 22 natural rubies, standing at a height of only 89 mm.
The intricate carvings of this artwork require nearly a thousand hours of craftsmanship. The elaborate decoration and exquisite workmanship of this Vajrabhairava pestle are truly awe-inspiring. The smallest area, such as the intricately crafted face and crown of the Buddha, measures only 0.5 mm2 (square millimeters), yet even when magnified several times, the craftsmanship remains exquisitely unparalleled.
