In Tibetan Buddhism, the Amitabha Buddha symbolizes freedom from disaster and disease, unlimited lifespan, and the function of increasing blessings and prolonging lifespan, worship of Amitabha was historically prevalent in both Chinese and Tibetan Buddhism.

The Buddha’s body, Sumeru throne (lotus pedestal), and the mandorla with the Six Manifestations are all made of 20K yellow gold, and the outer frame with the Eight Treasures and other decorative details are fashioned out of 18K yellow gold. The combination of these two gold finishes enhances the overall richness and depth of the work. The hardness of the 18K yellow gold outer frame protects the intricate details of the work from wear and tear.

The beaded chain with 108 pieces of top-grade lapis lazuli and the spacers between the beads are made of 18K yellow gold in the shape of a vajra pestle. The hanging loop of the frame is in the shape of a Makara’s head, embedded with eight natural rubies. The end of the chain is adorned with a gold-carved lotus-shaped mirror. At the center of the mirror is a custom-made magnifying glass that allows a closer examination of the work’s exquisite details. The sculpture is accompanied by a silver handcrafted pedestal adorned with auspicious clouds, intertwined vines, and lotus scrolls. The pedestal is inset with a cintamani (wish-fulfilling jewel) made of 18K yellow gold, further highlighting the majestic presence and solemnity of Amitabha Buddha.

The Amitabha Buddha sculpture required nearly 2000 hours to produce and is an important representative work of the master sculptor Mei Hua. Amitabha wears a luxurious headdress with floral patterns and has his hair tied in a high topknot. With a long and round face, wears a dignified expression. With a slender and upright posture, broad shoulders, a round chest, and a narrow waist, the overall form exudes grace and sophistication. The intricate craftsmanship fully showcases the solemnity of the Buddha image and the beauty of art. Behind the Buddha, there is a boated-shaped mandorla with a series of beads along the edges, and on both sides, flame and twining lotus scrolls are intricately carved, and adorned with 20 natural rubies. Within the mandorla, Six Manifestations can be found, namely, the Great Peng Bird (Garuda), the Whale (makara), the Son of Dragon, the Young Boy, the King of Beasts (lion), the King of Elephants.

The facial features of the Buddha in this sculpture are delicately portrayed, exuding compassion and dignity, and showcasing the sublime solemnity of the image. Building upon the foundation of Ming and Qing dynasty imperial court Buddhist sculptures, it also incorporates a fusion of various artistic elements. Whether in terms of form, decoration, or craftsmanship, it exhibits a remarkably high artistic quality, reflecting the exquisite mastery of the sculptor's micro-carving art and technique.
