Early 20th Century German Musical Bracket Clock

Inventory number: C1902005

Circa 1900, made by the famous German clockmaker Winterhalder & Hofmeier. Dimensions: 43cm × 31cm× 43cm (L×W ×H).

 

The bell-top case with brass urn finials, cast sound frets to the sides, the stepped base raised on foliate claw feet, the arched brass dial with caryatid and foliate corner pieces, a silvered Roman and Arabic chapter ring with matted center, above three silver sub-dials, from left to right, for fast and slow adjustment, Chime/ Silent, and music selection (chime on eight bells /chime on four gongs).

Triple fusee and chain movement with anchor escapement. The movement is engraved with the number 596 and signed "W&H Sch". 8-bell and 8-hammer musical chime system playing Whittington chime at the top of the movement, and at the front is 5 coiled gongs, four of which play Westminster chime and the larger one strike the hours.

Winterhalder & Hofmeier, a clockmaking company in the Black Forest region of Germany. It is regarded as one of the finest Victorian clockmakers of the time. The movements produced by the company at the turn of the 20th century were often mistaken for British movements due to their superior quality.
