19th Century Brass Mounted Mahogany Chiming Bracket Clock

Made circa the 1880s, signed Smith & Sons, Clerkenwell, London. Gilt brass mounted Honduran mahogany case. Triple train fusee movement with eight bells and cathedral gong. Two silvered chapter rings for chime/stop and Whittington Chimes / Cambridge Chimes.

 

About Smith &Son.

The company started in 1780 and by 1830 they were in a factory in St John's Square, Clerkenwell, and remained until the late 1980s. By 1851, Smith and Sons were one of the top six largest clockmakers in England and at the 1851 Great Exhibition, they exhibited a chiming clock, on 8 bells and striking on a gong.

It’s one of the leading clockmakers from the smallest to the largest timepieces, which were exported all over the world.
